AEVTSA Holds Sixth Knowledge Empowerment Session on Smart Grids and Millions of Electric Vehicles
The Electric Vehicle Technologies Association held the sixth session of its “EV Knowledge Empowerment Series” on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, titled “Smart Grids and Millions of Electric Vehicles: From Analysis to Decision.” The session was presented by Dr. Abdulaziz bin Dakhel Al-Mutairi, Chairman and Founding Member of the Association and Associate Professor in Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicle Engineering. The session addressed the global and Saudi landscape of electric vehicle adoption and examined the concept of power grid reliability, including its definitions, assessment levels, and quantitative indicators. It also highlighted the challenges that large-scale EV charging may pose to power grid reliability. The session presented a probabilistic modeling methodology for transforming EV charging data into probability distributions, supported by documented numerical results. It also explored the actual impact on power system reliability through applied results using an internationally recognized benchmark test system. In addition, the session discussed data-driven solutions, including dynamic strategies and smart tariff design, demonstrating how data-based approaches can contribute to restoring grid reliability to near-complete levels. The session aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the challenges associated with large-scale EV charging, introduce fundamental concepts and indicators of power system reliability, and explain statistical data-modeling methodologies and the selection of appropriate mathematical models for representing driver behavior. It also provided participants with practical insights into measuring the impact of different charging patterns on reliability indicators and understanding how data-driven solutions can be applied within the Saudi context by planners, researchers, and entrepreneurs. The session attracted 75 participants, reflecting growing interest in smart grids, power system reliability, and the future integration of large numbers of electric vehicles into the electrical grid.
